about

"Breath of Brahma & Sri Crickets" is the first collaboration of producer and clarinetist Waclaw Zimpel and Hans Kulk - the Dutch master of analog electronics.

Waclaw Zimpel and Hans Kulk first met at the end of 2018, during Zimpel's artist residency at the Willem Twee Studios in Den Bosch, Netherlands - a temple of analog electronic music.
At the time, Zimpel was recording his second solo album Massive Oscillations, while learning the possibilities of old sound generators from Kulk, a true scholar of electronic music, experimenter, educator and sound explorer, co-founder of Willem Twee Studios. Kulk has thus become a silent hero of Zimpel's solo material, like with many other productions by artists visiting Willem Twee Studios.

Kulk's artistic practice involves interacting with sound and generating new sounds enchanted by old test and measurement machines (T&M), analog computers, reel-to-reel tape recorders and vintage synths. He has never been interested in publicity or the music industry. Although he created countless recordings, they were hardly ever officially published. .
For Kulk, the act of creating and interacting with the resulting sound is the essence of his artistic practice.

Zimpel and Kulk are sonorists, seekers of the essence of sound. "Breath of Brahma & Sri Crickets" is the capturing of the moment of this search and the materialization of their vision for contemplative music. Their intention was to create a space for respite, where thoughts can stop.

"Breath of Brahma”, the first of the album's two tracks, is on the likeness of Tibetan ritual music or Indian tampura sound, an ever-changing drone, improvised for four hands by Kulk and Zimpel, to which Zimpel then added his trademark long alto clarinet tones processed by tape delay.
"Sri Crickets” was recorded in Warsaw at Polish Radio Concert Studio S2, later processed by Kulk in Den Bosch. Here Zimpel plays the piano, assisted by a custom-made robot consisting of six electromagnetic hammers located above the keyboard, controlled by an analog controller.
"Sri Crickets" are endless independent rhythmic cycles, reminiscent of gamelan music or
La Monte Young's piano experiments.

All proceeds from the sale of the digital album will be donated to organizations supporting Ukrainians affected by Russia's military aggression.
